The Port Maria Hospital is situated on a hill within walking distance of approximately quarter mile from the main road en route to the town of Port Maria. It is vulnerable to hurricane winds, but not to flooding and tidal waves. The hospital was established in the year 1915 to serve the population of St. Mary and adjoining parishes such as Portland, St. Ann and St. Catherine. The present physical structure is a two-storey concrete building which was built in 1969/70 and is still in good condition. The first floor houses Children and Maternity wards, the second floor, male and female wards, and the ground floor, Accident & Emergency/Out Patients Department.
